We've revamped our reading process this year in hopes of notifying applicants earlier than in previous years. Although we'll probably still be sending out news for the full March 15 - April 15 period, our goal is to have most of it finished before the end of March.

Hi Luisa,

The scanned copies are good for our purposes over here at the MFA Program, but The Graduate School will want official copies. You may be able to have those sent electronically instead of ordering paper copies. I would check with The Graduate School to see if they have an arrangement with your school.

In the process of completing my application, I uploaded electronic copies of transcripts from all the undergraduate and graduate schools I have attended. Could you tell me whether I would still need to have official copies sent to UNC at this point, or are the scanned copies sufficient for now?

Hi Emily,

We still ask for a hard copy of the writing sample because they're generally easier to read than the electronic versions with the application. However, if we don't have it, we'll definitely use the uploaded sample!

Hi Steph,

Our goal each year is to notify everyone by March 15th. Last year we were dreadfully late, but we've made some adjustments and hope that won't happen again.

As for your transcripts, it's best if you send them directly to The Graduate School (your university may even be able to send them electronically). However, if they show up here, we'll carry them over so they'll be your official file.

I can assume that because the program is so competitive, students will not receive acceptance/rejection letters until after the deadline of January 1st, correct?

Hi Marragold,

I believe The Graduate School does have a mechanism for students to apply for an application fee waiver in special situations but I'm not sure of the particulars. The best thing to do would be to call them directly. Their number is 336-334-5596.

As for Creative Nonfiction, we don't have plans to add a CNF track in the near future, however we do offer a creative nonfiction workshop each spring that most all of our students take, so you would have the opportunity to study CNF with two different members of the faculty while enrolled.

First of all, thank you for all the helpful info already posted here! I am in the process of choosing schools to apply to and getting my MFA package together. I'm fairly certain at this point that Greensboro is making my list as I have a former professor and close friend who has many good things to say about the program. Anyhow, my question is, is there any way to apply for an application fee waver here as there are for some other programs? Secondly, I'm just curious as to whether or not it seems likely that a literary non-fiction track might be added at any point in the future or if it would be possible to incorporate such work and study into one's study and practice of fiction writing. Thanks!

It's certainly fine to have your letters of rec delivered through Interfolio. However, you should still have them delivered directly to The Graduate School, who handles all of the application credentials.

Hi, thanks for this blog and all the helpful answers. I have yet another question about the personal statement. I see that it's not required-- is it discouraged? I planned on including one that's about 500 so that I can discuss my previous teaching experience. If it isn't discouraged and I include it, then I should attach my CV to the same document, correct?

I'm not sure how the application fee works when submitting to multiple programs. It would probably be best to call over to The Graduate School and get an answer straight from the source. Their number is: 336.334.5596

As for the writing sample--all we require is your creative work. No need for a critical paper or a personal statement.

I am wanting to apply to both the MA & the MFA programs. Will I need to submit an application fee twice?

Also does the MFA application need a critical writing sample? Or is it just the creative writing sample?

Hi,

We do have alums who've gone into SciFi/Fantasy: Kelly Link and Warren Rochelle, to name two. However, our current faculty do focus more on literary fiction than genre fiction and that's what your primary classroom instruction would be geared around. If working with someone who is practicing in the genre is really important to you, you might look at NC State, who has John Kessell on faculty.

I am interested in the MFA program, but I am more of a genre fiction writer than a literary fiction writer. I am one of those good old fashioned sci-fi/fantasy nerds. Does the Creative Writing program accept those kinds of works? Some schools only want literary fiction, so I thought I'd ask. Thank you.
